Honoré Daumier
was born in Marseille in 1808 and died in poverty in Valmondois in 1879. He was a great caricaturist, painter and sculptor, epecially renouned for his cartoons satirizing 19th cnetury French society and politics. He was one of the first artists to professially use the lithograph and honed the art to yet unknown heights – to our still very great pleasure.

The lithographs we have on sale come mainly from the magazine La Caricature and Le Charivari. They were printed in those magazine with text on the back, were enclosed on white paper/sur blanc as an added bonus or in bookshops. They have all been cut out and/or collected contemporaneously. They also have all been expertly restored – except Mr. Pot de Naz – and are in, mostly 50×35 acidfree passe-partouts. According to the time however, none of the lithographs are signed of course – except in the stone.
